FRANKFURT INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR
Presenting Galician literature in Europe
[21/10/09] In Frankfurt, the writers Marina Mayoral, Alfredo Conde and Vicente Araguas discussed the topic of the promotion of Galician literature in foreign countries.
At the Frankfurt International Book Fair, Galicia presented the current status of its literary and publishing sectors. The stand shared by the Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Xunta de Galicia and the Galician Publishers’ Association (AGE) was visited by a large number of professionals and members of the general public, who were able to discover all of the latest products from the 25 publishers represented.
Galician literature was also represented in Frankfurt, with the writers Marina Mayoral, Alfredo Conde and Vicente Araguas offering a round table debate on the promotion of Galician literature in the foreign market. The General Director for the Promotion and Diffusion of Culture, Francisco López, confirmed the Xunta’s commitment to promote Galician literature in the international markets.
Literature from great narrators
López emphasised the "need to raise the awareness of Galician authors in foreign countries," and that "Galicia has literature written by great narrators, but which does not reach the European market." In response to this situation, the Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism "will be providing solid support to fund translations."
Francisco López also referred to the fact that one of the main goals of his department is to "promote the competitiveness of Galician literature in international markets, support the future of our writers and encourage innovations in the way that Galician books are published, distributed and publicised." This is the objective of Galicia’s presence at the Líber Book Fair in Madrid, the Frankfurt International Book Fair, and its forthcoming participation at the International Book Fair in Guadalajara, Mexico.
