Galician books show their hand at Líber and Frankfurt

[02/10/09] A new stage begins at international trade fairs with the aim of improving and developing the book industry.

October marks the start of a new season of international book fairs. The Regional Council of Culture and Tourism will be presenting Galician books at the main publishing events: Frankfurt, Líber and Guadalajara. Galicia’s presence at these events will be based on criteria of efficiency and cost-effectiveness, aimed at achieving the improvement and development of the book industry.

In September, the Galician government defined the calendar for the international promotion policy for books from the region for the period 2009-2010 in collaboration with representatives of Galician publishers. This year, the Xunta and regional publishers will be present at the Líber fair in Madrid and in Frankfurt in October, and in Guadalajara (Mexico) at the end of November and early December. In 2010 the programme will continue at the International Children’s and Young People’s Book Fair in Bologna, a promotional visit to the Buenos Aires Book Fair, and at the end of the year a return visit to Líber, Frankfurt and Guadalajara. Galician comics will also be represented at the Comic Fair in Barcelona and at the Angoulême Festival in France.

The aim of this calendar of trade fairs is to promote the image of Galicia and to facilitate contacts with international book agents, on paper as well as in other formats. The General Director of Promotion and Diffusion of Culture, Francisco López, explained the four main principles behind Galicia’s participation in these fairs: to control expenses, ensure the cost-effectiveness of the investment made, professional interest and the strict application of regulations. The Galician government’s objective is for these international fairs to help promote Galician books through contacts with other markets, seeking a "reasonable balance between the investment and the practical results", according to Francisco López.

Galicia at Líber

The first event will be the Líber book fair in Madrid, held between the 7th and the 9th of October 2009. Russia is the guest of honour at this twenty-seventh edition of the fair, with the presence of more than 700 publishers from sixteen countries. A total of twenty-seven Galician publishers and organisations will be displaying their latest work, with the majority present on the stand of the Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Galician Publishers’ Association.

The programme of activities on offer from the Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism includes a round table, at which four of the main authors who write in the Galician language will be debating about journalism and literature. Four publishers will also be attending the event with their own stands: Primerapersona, Ideaspropias, Oqo Editora and Nova Galicia Edicións.

Galician books travel to Frankfurt

The next step will be to participate at the world’s leading book fair. From the 14th to the 18th of October, Galician books will be in Frankfurt, alongside more than 7,300 exhibitors from 100 countries. More than 300,000 visitors and 10,000 journalists will be able to discover the latest publications from Galicia at the stand of the Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Galician Publishers’ Association.

In Frankfurt, a group of important Galician writers will offer a talk about the promotion of Galician literature in foreign countries. Two Galician publishers will also have their own stands at the fair: Kalandraka and Nova Galicia.
